The Revision Process Is Important!

As humans, we are constantly in a revision process. The revision process can come in different forms such as revising life decisions and most importantly revising after the drafting process. As students, adults, and writers, we usually write a lot of papers or proposals so it is important to revise. This step in the writing process helps the readers comprehend what the writer is trying to portray. However, when it comes to the revision process, people tend to feel dreadful and not realize the importance of this step.

In Obert Skye’s TED talk “The Magic of Revision”, Mr.Skye reiterates the importance of the revision process during drafting. As we approach the revision process we prefer skipping this step because we are frightened and hateful towards this process. As a result, we don’t realize the beneficial factors that this process provides. As writers, we must follow the writing process, Mr.Skye calls this process The Obert Eight, which are eight important steps of writing. Out of the eight steps of the writing process, Mr.Skye believes that step number five is the most important, which is to revise. With the revision process, new ideas can be discovered and be interpreted to enhance our writing. The writing and revision process goes hand in hand, as writers, we write to tell a story, express a point, and share an idea, with revision we revise to tell the best story and properly execute a point and idea. Both of these processes benefits both the writer and the reader because the writer is able to get their ideas across and the reader is able to comprehend what they were reading. Mr.Skye also emphasizes that after we master our ideas of writing we next have to master the magic of revision. The revision process is similar to a magical wizard where both scenarios can be very frightening, but once the “spell” is released you are able to get the right intentions out which will lead to a good paper.

As students, we encounter many essays through our experiences in school. From my experience, after drafting I know that it is important to revise but when it comes to the revision process I personally abhor it. This is because I’m on a time constraint and I do not know how to approach the topic which makes it even more stressful. As much as I despise writing the essay, I will still incorporate revisions in my essay after my drafting process. However, during the revisions, I will skim through the assignment so I could submit it. After encountering this TED talk it gave me a different perspective on revision. For example, in the work view life view essay I was too general about my ideas instead of having more of my viewpoint being incorporated into the essay. With the revision and feedbacks that I received, the reader was able to have a better connection and understanding of my viewpoints. Another example where revision is important would be the Burnett and Evans, “Designing Your Life” book. Throughout the book, they teach and inform you that an informed designer would go through a process of revisions while designing. This is because, as informed designers, we are constantly designing new ideas to improve the design thinking process. During the process, problems can also arise which can prevent you from reaching your goals. As I am designing my own career, I am constantly revising my design process by conducting research to expand and generate new ideas.

While Mr.Skye was delivering his ideas he used some of the rhetorical situations to capture the viewers’ attention, such as purpose, stance, and exigence. Throughout the TED talk, Mr.Skye emphasizes the importance of the revision process and the effects of revision. As he is explaining his ideas his attitude for revision is to inform us on why we should revise. These ideas led him to address that even if the revision process is dreadful it is still an important step to the writing process. This is because the writer’s ideas are able to share shared to the readers while the reader is able to comprehend what was being written.

Whether we are revising our life decisions or revising after drafting we will constantly encounter the revision process. Although the writing process and revision process can be dreadful, it is a journey that we will continue. As writers, we want the audience to enjoy and be able to get something out of what we wrote. In order to do that, the revision process needs to come to play by ensuring that everything makes sense and all the ideas are expressed properly.
